I often go out to the garage to workout and the floor is strewn with mats, balls, tires, yoga blocks, and weights. It’s all an intricate obstacle course or fort. Sometimes legos make an appearance. Welcome to a home gym with kids!
It’s fast to clean up and reorganize, especially since the kids know where everything belongs, but what I really care about is that they want to be there. I think exposing them to an atmosphere where hard work is the norm and where consistency and practice are expected is powerful. My kids watch me. While I’ve been working out, I’ve had each of them come the gym and say they want to join me. They throw the battle ropes around, they do burpees and wall sits, they do yoga. It’s a physical-minded play time. I love it and they love it.
I know adults who are intimidated by going to a gym.
They think they’ll look dumb or not strong. They think they’ll be judged for what they can or cannot do, what they know or do not know. These people want to, but there’s fear of an unknown. We all start somewhere. Just own it and do it.
In my journey, I’ve found so much power from physical exertion that has spilled over into the rest of my life. Having my kids “play” in our home gym gives me hope that they too will have courage to push themselves physically. Maybe they’ll look ridiculous doing something, but that they can own it because they feel confident…because it’s familiar…because it’s what they grew up with.
That’s why having a home gym with kids is important to me.
I get that it’s not what everyone can or even wants to do. And if you’re one of those people who is fighting fear in going to a gym, “you must do thing you think you cannot do” (Eleanor Roosevelt). You can do this. For those with kids, give them a pair of weights to workout with you or maybe have a planking challenge. They will follow your lead.
