How we met:
Steve is a dad who takes raising his kids well seriously. He skateboards, he’s the example of staying active, and he inspires others. He doesn’t give up.
I frequent the local skate park on early mornings with my own kids. It’s a perfect time to go with their bikes and scooters because there’s hardly any big kids there. Where I had dirt jumps out my front door, we go to the skate park and they love experimenting in the bowl and riding up and down the bumps. I’m glad we have something like this close to home. This time, I saw Steve with his kids also there and as they were packing up to leave, I took the opportunity to meet them. I’m a better person because of this interaction.
Steve is joining the community of Dynamos here on Carrot Bowl. This blog is about active living. His interview is about sharing that with his kids. Dynamo interviews are about sharing our stories of life, our living it, our relishing it, and our moving forward in healthy living. This looks different for everyone, but we should celebrate and share wherever we are in our story. I really believe it empowers the teller and inspires the rest of us on our own journeys. Steve rocks. He’s a powerhouse and I love his tenacity. Thank you for sharing a sliver of your goodness with us, Steve.
What does healthy living mean to you?
Getting off the couch, not being lazy, showing an example for the kids. We have reward quarters, like I brought 2 or 3 water bottles with me, and we’re not allowed to leave until the water’s gone. Stuff like that. A reward system that makes it part of our lifestyle and then it sticks.
What fitness do you enjoy and why?
I used to skate a thousand years ago. haha. But he (5 year old son) got into it and I just started skating again, about a month ago. I try to teach him the right way, the right way to fall. I just enjoy it. I hurt a lot worse than I used to, but I’m not as arrogant as I used to be.
How has your example motivated or inspired other people?
Actually it’s funny. I have Wednesday, Thursday, Friday off and every Wednesday I meet another Dad up here, he’s 42, same age as me. And the first time he saw me he didn’t have a board and he went out and bought a board and met me the next week so I hope it helped!
What piece of advice do you like to share?
Get off the couch. I don’t watch a whole lot of TV, I don’t let them watch a whole lot of TV, they get their TV as a reward. We just keep going. It helps them sleep at night, it helps me sleep at night. Just get off the couch, that will kill you.
What is a goal you have right now?
I’m actually trying to do this frontside boardslide. It’s killing me! haha. I just want to live a long time. You stop moving and you stop moving.
You’re dead and gone, what do you want to be remembered for?
I’ll be remembered by the way my kids are. They’re going to turn out well. That I made three good contributing citizens who will hopefully make good life choices. Other than that, I’m not going to be Ghandi or anything.
